5-9 Rockingham Street is an archetypal display of geometric optimisation, maximising space utilisation whilst paying homage to the heritage of the local area through the use of a brick faced façade. London’s deeply embedded railway arteries combined with our narrows, do not lend well to urban development. However, CKC Properties Ltd and Maccreanor Lavington have eloquently executed the balance of space and existing infrastructure to provide student accommodation in a ‘flat-iron’ type building on an existing brown field site.

The Rockingham Street development also includes Victorian railway arches along London’s Low Line, offering mixed use commercial space and creating a thoroughfare which will revitalise the local area.

Historically the region fell into the “well-to-do” bracket, according to Booth. But as time passed the areas decline was influenced by economic, war and typical city migration of wealth as transport evolved. The arches to the railway providing trades such as a smithies, marine stores, and other low-cost businesses have long gone and now offer mixed use commercial premises.
